Holī- Understanding it from the Purāṇas

Holī is celebrated on Phālguna Śukla Pūrṇimā, the final full moon of the Hindu lunar year. Traditionally, this period is associated with the Sun’s movement toward the closing segment of the annual zodiacal cycle and with the palpable shift from winter to Vasanta (spring). As a result, Holī functions both as a seasonal threshold and as a ritual marker of transition—a symbolic “closing” of the old and a welcome to the renewed fertility and sociability of spring.
