Patterns, Recursions and Iterations in Saṃskṛta Poetry

Are poets and musicians applied mathematicians?
Is there mathematics in music and poetry?
What makes a particular rhythm rhythmic?
 
These are questions that often arise during discussions of classical music and poetry. Some say that mathematics of patterns, beats and fractions come naturally to musicians while others argue that musicians do not care much about mathematics and it is intuition that helps them create melodious music. However, in the history of Classical Music and Saṃskṛta Prosody, we see stalwarts like Piṅgala, Hemacandra, Śārṅgadeva, who composed treatises on music with a strong emphasis on mathematics.
 
This short course delves into the mathematical aspects of Saṃskṛta Prosody and explores the ideas proposed by Piṅgala (300 BCE) that remain relevant even today.

Overview

This course is a glimpse into the birth of binary mathematics and how various recursive and iterative algorithms were discussed in the Bhāratīya subcontinent through the subject of poetry. We take Piṅgala’s Chandaḥśāstra and understand how Piṅgala brought forth a branch of mathematics that is now considered a part of Computer Science, at least two thousand years prior to its Western contemporaries.

Suggested minimum age: 13 years

Prerequisites: basic understanding of place value, powers and exponents, and arithmetic

Intent

Mathematics is considered a subject with polar views. Many are averse to the subject because of the way it is presented. Piṅgala’s Chandaḥśāstra provides an opportunity to present topics of permutations and combinations, and binary mathematics through an art form, thus making the subject more relevant and easier to grasp. Today, topics such as iterations, recursions, optimisation, etc. are considered as areas that fall under Computer Science. Concepts such as Fibonacci sequence, Binary sequences, etc. seem alien or disconnected from real-life for most students. However,  when viewed through the lens of music and poetry, these topics bring a different flavour altogether to the subject. 

In this course, we will look at the birth of ideas like iterations and recursions in Saṃskṛta poetry. We will also see how some mathematical ideas are wrongly attributed to Western names, even though the same ideas were discussed in Bhārata centuries, if not millennia ago.

Structure

This workshop is the first part of a potentially larger series. This part deals with the birth of binary mathematics and recursions and iterations in Bhārata through varṇa-vṛttas (syllabic metres). The later part of the series can focus on mātrā-vṛttas, tāna-prastāra and tāla-prastāra, covering combinatorics in music and percussion instruments.

Śrī Vinay Nair

Vinay Nair is mathematics educator with 7 years of industry experience and 16 years of experience in mathematics education. He co-founded the Raising A Mathematician Foundation in 2014, a not-for-profit organisation working towards identifying and nurturing mathematical talents across Bhārata. In 2018, he founded Vichar Vatika, an organisation working towards building mathematical thinking and love for the subject through puzzles and games. He is passionate about Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and has been conducting national-level residential training programs on mathematics in IKS for school students for the past 16 years. So far, he has conducted about 50 residential training programs in mathematics in partnership with premier institutions in Bhārata such as Chennai Mathematical Institute, Azim Premji University, Krea University, etc. He has served on a NCERT committee for a year to identify the causes for maths phobia among the students. He is the recipient of Maths Genius Award 2015, AIR 8 in Teaching Professionals Olympiad 2018 and Indian Achievers’ Award 2023 for Outstanding Professional Achievement.
